Dezeen Award shortlist for the Richard Rogers Drawing Gallery

01 October 2022

An impressive result for this little project, the Richard Rogers' Drawing Gallery, one of five projects shortlisted in the Dezeen Award's Small Building category. The recently announced architecture shortlist covers 57 projects in the running for awards in 11 different categories.

The shortlists were scored by Dezeen’s architecture jury, including Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, principal of CmDesign Atelier Tosin Oshinowo, Stefano Boeri Architetti founder Stefano Boeri and Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari. The winner of each project category will be announced online in November. All 11 winners will then go on to compete for the title of design project of the year.

Set in the Château la Coste vineyard, a 500-acre area of outstanding natural beauty and an internationally renowned destination for art and architecture, the Richard Rogers' Drawing Gallery is a pure cantilever, hovering weightless in space. It touches the ground lightly, belying the robust engineering below ground that supports the cantilever.

Industrial in nature but with elegantly handcrafted details, the building is itself an elegant sculpture in this landscape – in harmony with its neighbours. Two sets of four steel cables anchor the building to a concrete foundation, providing the counterbalance to the weight of the platform jutting into space.
