Construction begins on new TfL building at The International Quarter

30 June 2015

A groundbreaking ceremony took place at The International Quarter to symbolically mark the start of construction of the new Transport for London building in Stratford, East London.

The International Quarter is a joint venture between Lend Lease and London Continental Railways to create a thriving business quarter at the heart of Stratford City, London. Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners has drawn up the masterplan for four million square feet of work space alongside retail and a hotel, and is responsible for the design of two of the buildings on site. This landmark 265,000 square foot building for TfL sits at the gateway to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and will provide TfL’s third accommodation hub, housing 3,000 TfL workers from autumn 2017.

Ivan Harbour, Senior Partner and Lead Designer, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, said: The International Quarter is pioneering an evolution of the workplace, where a dynamic, creative community gives focus to business whilst meeting the high expectations of employees. Fresh air, Natural daylight, views, connectivity and a clear dialogue between the built form and the public realm were all key considerations in the masterplan and each of the buildings. Today’s groundbreaking for a new Transport for London Headquarters at TIQ is the start of this emerging city quarter.
